I think Magro thought he hit the jackpot when he realised his gilfriend didn't care about Valentines Day.
And I don't care. I was going to spend it with some friends until I thought it might be nice to chill out with my boyfriend the one year we actually got to spend it together.
Unfortunately, said boyfriend thought it would be a good idea to go out and get drunk with a friend beforehand. So I really, really didn't care until he rolled home at 9pm, just as I was getting back from work and working out, completely wasted and having already eaten!!!
This was a serious mistake my friends. I can forgive drunkenness even at such an early hour but eating without me? That's a cardinal sin.
E non me ne frega niente.
I wish this was a face of guilt and shame but it wasn't. Well, maybe it was a face of shame but certainly not guilt. In his drunken state, he thought I was being weird for trying to take photos of the restaurant (is it my fault that it was full of couples??) This is his "ground swallow me up" pose. Not cool.
Anyway, I suggested ordering a pizza as there was nothing in the fridge but he decided we would try our chances and go out to eat nearby. Via Solferino has seen a little explosion of new restaurants and bars in recent months and I am loving it. Shiki, a little sushi restaurant with sumptuous decor, was our destination.
I was very proud of Magro for going into the restaurant without checking the ethnicity of the kitchen staff (he refuses to eat sushi made by anyone other than Japanese people. I think my tiramisù may have convinced him that you do not need to originate from the same country as the food in order to make it damn delicious. We could be showing slow signs of improvement here.)
As he wasn't that hungry, he let me choose a selection for us to share. Heh. We ignored the Valentines menu (it just wasn't worth going for a set menu when my lovely idiot had filled up on piadine) and chose from the little plates that Shiki offers. They are around €7 each and some are obviously better value than others. It was all absolutely delicious even if I didn't quite stray from my failsafe favourite fish, tuna. The mini tuna burger was 100% worth €7 just for being so gorgeously meaty (I'm a crap vege-/pesca- tarian).
After, I plumped for a selection of sushi, including eel (first time and it won't be the last!), sea bass, prawn and avocado and finally mozzarella, pesto and tuna (of course) rolls.

At the end of it all, even I was beginning to feel a little full. Don't you just love that about sushi? It feels so fresh and healthy (even if it isn't always) and it fills you up perfectly. Even so, there's always space for dessert. I grew up insisting on the existence of a "dinner stomach" and a "pudding stomach" (pudding, by the way, means dessert for those of you who grew up thinking it was something else. It isn't and you're wrong.) It would have been treason to my younger self to not go for the unconventional but hands-down delicious tiramisù (I have a fixation if you couldn't already tell).
Unfortunately Magro didn't sober up so we went home to sleep. No more Valentines stuff. Typical.
Tipico.

How dare he eat without you?! Sounds like you had a good time anyway.
ReplyDeleteI know right?? I was cool with it until that point. Sometimes he just shrugs and says he could have an ice cream for dinner. A single ice cream. I despair. xxx
