The time has come.
I literally unfollowed a blog after this. She had outlined EVERYTHING that happens in The Fault In Our Stars. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?! The book was so marvellous and moving and when I was reading it, I just wanted to lock myself away from the world and swim in the pages. If somebody had told me what happened at the end, I would have murdered them! Immunising yourself from imminent death by distributing the plot on the internet is COWARDLY and MEAN. I feel very strongly about this. I had actually finished the book when I read her review and I just could not believe it when she glibly disclosed the ending. Is glibly the right word? I don't know but I am just so ANGRY!
I am finally unleashing my wrath on the world. Are you afraid? You'd better be.
The original inspiration for this came from Lisa at Not Quite Enough when she posted this list of bad blogger behaviours. I read them, chuckled at them, agreed with them and hung my head in shame at a couple of them (nobody's immune!) Lisa also posted this list of good blogger behaviours so check that out as well.
And as the time comes to clear out my Google Friend Connect feed AGAIN (i.e, because I am following the limit of 300 blogs from back in my click-happy days and now there are loads more I want to follow but can't) it seems like an appropriate time.
So, how many sins are you guilty of? Do you agree with them or do you think I'm being a moany hag?
1) Comments
This had to go at the top of the list. There are so many platforms out there for leaving comments now. Some of them I get on with quite well - the general Blogger one, Disqus... others, not so much. Squarespace refuses to acknowledge HTML (SO EMBARASSING when I forget this and everyone can see my < and my /), Wordpress forces me to log into the account I made and forgot about ages ago and Google+ shares the post all over my feed when all I wanted to do was say hello.
And then we have the comment moderation. Ok, I get it about spam comments, they're annoying (mostly for their synthetic tone and absolute jumble sale of words). But do you really need to moderate my comment AFTER you've asked me to sit, squinting at a screen, reading something that's so well guarded against internet robots that not even a real human can discern those letters? I want to comment and I want to comment easily!!
2) Interaction
My favourite blogs are my favourites not just because they are full of interesting content but also because the personality behind the posts extends to their readership. They reply to comments, they comment on your blog, they chat to you and you have something coherent to attach that site to.
Some bloggers have too many readers to be able to reply to all of their comments or visit their readers' blogs and I understand that. I like to see a bit of effort made in replying to some comments or to referencing readers' wishes in their posts but for the Big Blogs, it isn't much of an issue.
But when I've sent a thoughtful comment to a blogger with a small to average readership and I get absolutely no response despite my own dedicated following of that blog, I don't feel like I want to keep reading. It's not that it's the be all and end all of a blog for me but when I've been commenting for a few months and taking the time to leave comments I've thought about carefully and they're never even acknowledged, I feel much less inclined to visit that person's site.
3) Layouts
Ok a silly little pet peeve but layout is hugely important for me. I want everything to look pretty and I want the fonts to compel me to read on. I love writing and whenever I sit down at my computer and attempt to write another story (never gets past a page), I normally spend about half an hour fiddling with fonts to find the one that will inspire me. As a kid I always used to draw and design (probably should have followed my passions rather than listening to accademia and ending up in this odd place where I have no idea what to do?) So yes anyway. Aesthetics are important. I know, I know, I'm so superficial but I can't read a blog with a burgundy and lime colour scheme!
4) Spoilers

5) GFC
It's not working properly for me at the moment. So I have put it on my list of annoyances. It won't show me what my favourite bloggers have been up to lately and it won't let me delete people I don't want to follow anymore. Sob sob.

Hi Lucy! I wanted to stop by and thank you for your always thoughtful comments. Especially on my most recent post! I hateeee when I leave long comments and they're not acknowledged. It feels a little like talking to someone in real life and having them just not acknowledge you at all. It's weird.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the TFIOS film?! It's one of those rare films that is just as good as the book. I've never been in a movie before where the whole theater is sobbing though, haha. I would have unfollowed that blog, too! What the hell.
Thank you Shannon! And oh no, I suppose this post looks a little like a threat: if you don't reply to my comments, I won't read your blog anymore! Oops haha. Well it isn't quite like that but nevermind :)
DeleteAnd yeah, totally get that! I have poured my heart out in comments before and have had nothing in response. So annoying.
I haven't! It isn't out here yet!! Hoping to see it this weekend eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. xxx
Haha great post! Your comment system is probably the easiest, I'm afraid I'm too lazy to comment when it's hard work. And replying to all comments is such a nice part of a blog, I'm really glad you do.
ReplyDeleteEmbarrassingly though I'm one of those people that look up the complete plot of the books/ films I see.... I think if there is a spoiler notice it's alright, although it's on wikipedia anyway so I guess it is unnecessary in a blog post where you are encouraging others to read it.
Hope you're enjoying the weather!xxxxx
Haha yeah I give up sometimes too! But then I can be quite determined and refuse to let it beat me as if its some oppressive dictator or something... such an odd one.
DeleteI DO THAT TOO! But I like to be able to choose to have the plot spoilt for me. I don't want to click something thinking I'm going to be given a taster and instead have it rammed down my throat haha xxx
Oh and the weather is killing me!
I'm on holiday and have been enjoying it too much to follow my Bloglovin/Twitter etc but I hopped online this afternoon to post something and coincidently this was in my Bloglovin feed.
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely not being a moony hag, especially about spoilers. I remember back in my Deviantart days that the day after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was released in book form someone posted proper plot spoilers - one day after it was released, we shouldn't all have to be on the pulse and the world's fastest readers, cinema goers or TV watchers to avoid having things spoilt. Boo to people who post spoilers, may they stand on plugs.
Oh my goodness, that's ridiculous!! I mean, to give the poor girl some slack, she had posted it about six months after all the hype began. But still! Hope you have an amazing rest of your holiday, enjoy it and get off the internet!! :p xxx
DeleteI agree with every single point (except 5, but only because I don't use GFC!). I recently unfollowed a blog because she picked and chose which comments to respond to (out of only six comments on one particular post) and acts like she's such a big, famous blogger. She wouldn't be getting any attention if it weren't for the people who read her blog! I really don't understand sometimes. I'm big on responding to/interacting with my readers. I also hate comment moderation...drives me crazy! I don't think I have that on my blog but I don't even know how to check if I do (I'm assuming I don't because I still get notifications to approve comments). Anyway, great post!

Ergh that's so annoying! I hate it when people get too big for their boots, in real life and online! My favourite part of the blog is interacting with readers so that's probably why it bothers me when other people don't - why are they doing it if they're not talking to their audience? It just becomes a big show about them otherwise xxx
DeleteI agree with all of the above, except for 5. I don't even know what GFC is! Lol! Spoilers, though, are a HUGE no-no!
ReplyDeleteHaha it's basically my Blogger feed which shows up on the dashboard with (supposedly) all the recent posts from the blogs I follow. Doesn't feel like working very often though! xxx
DeleteThis is such a good post. I'm definitely going to head over to Lisa's post and see what she has to say. Admittedly, I have been a bad commentor as of late, and for that, I apologize. You have always done such a wonderful job leaving me comments and reading my blog, so please know that I appreciate every one and read every one! (And I do reply to them; my replies are on each respective post. I would email you a reply, but I don't know your email address.) Anyway, thank you for all of those, and I hope to try and get back into commenting more regularly.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm usually prone to unfollowing a blog if I don't feel any interaction between myself and the blogger. What I enjoy so much about blogging is the community--the people I meet, the people I talk to, the stories I hear. I love learning about people and seeing what their lives are like. And not having the opportunity to develop a relationship? *shrug* I don't want to be left in a one-sided blogging relationship, I guess.
Also: GFC hasn't been working very well for me recently, either. It has its moments.
GFC is permanently not working for me at the moment and won't let me manage my settings! What a naughty service it is.
DeleteI hope you liked Lisa's post too and I by no means expect a reply to every single comment, I'm just happy to be acknowledged by someone once in a while :) it's pretty much a case of.. if I've heard from you a couple of times, I'm happy and that effect will last for years :p xxx
When reading this I was nodding and thinking hell yes, yes and that does my nut in too. I am absolutely hatting Disqus at the moment if you are already logged into Google you don't stand a hope in commenting you just get swirling cogs. Some of my favourite blogs use this and I just can't deal with it any more. Wordpress recognising you have an account yes so someone does not pinch your blogging name but I don't want to comment using it. Great post Lucy
ReplyDeleteOh no way, I had no idea about the Disqus problems? I'll keep that in mind then as I was thinking of installing it! It's strange cos I'm always logged into Google but I never have those problems with Disqus :/ weird. Technology just doesn't work, that's my conclusion! xxx
