First of all, I should probably point out that I am really, really easy to annoy.
Moreover, when I'm feeling irritable, I tend to go on the hunt for things that I know will wind me up more.
That guy on my Facebook feed who is so blindly ignorant and bigoted? I'm going to read every single airheaded status update of his from the past year.
That girl on Instagram who hashtags everything about her relationship to within an inch of her life? I'm going to sit there and scroll through every damn photo.
Hell, this morning I even googled "Adobe is shit" when I couldn't get Illustrator to do what I wanted it to at work and then spent a couple of minutes scrolling through ranty forums, revelling in this celebration of crapness.
Getting irritated and letting it take over for a little while is my way of blowing off steam. When I was at school, my friend Olivia (who is still one of my wonderful best friends today) and I would wet ourselves laughing at our old-woman style rants. Complaining wasn't something else to get annoyed about, it was something to be ridiculed. Our anger would break down in a beautiful, hilarious catharsis. Think of those films and TV shows with a grumpy main character for whom everything goes wrong to comic effect. We were kind of transforming ourselves into that person for a while and turning the groans into laughs.
Needless to say, our early friendship cemented "moaning = good" into my brain. Which doesn't always go down so well in the real world.
But I say - who cares!
This morning, I came to the realisation that I am currently following an obscene amount of blogs. I used to just add every and any blog to my following list without really looking at whether the content was relevant to me or not. Stupid, I know.
I realised that I was skipping past posts in my feed without even considering them simply because I didn't enjoy reading that blog. It was definitely time for a clear out!
As I went through, I saw more and more things that now define what I'm definitely not looking for when I click on someone's page. As a result, the first in my Grinding My Gears series will be about things that annoy me about blogging, probably at some point later this week.
Don't worry, I'll keep up the sweet smiley facade for the rest of the time but you know when you haven't had chocolate properly for a week and a half (by properly, I mean half a kilo in one sitting, I had 2 squares of dark chocolate last night and it was. not. satisfactory.) and you start feeling like you need to talk about your feelings?
Yeah, that's what I've got right now.
What annoys you? Is it the little things like people walking slowly on pavements or does technology drive you absolutely nuts? Is it your friends, family, other people's families, your colleagues, your dog (surely not!).. what is it? I'd love to know if anyone else shares my little self-indulgence :)
I just found you (thanks to your comment on sailorjennie) and I'm so happy I did :)
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the "blog follower spree" craziness. I also tend to do that on twitter, but there it's not so much of a hassle (until I just unfollow a couple of magazine accounts that I don't need in my feed, anyway, eh!). I also get really annoyed by tourists in front of University. Yeah, it's a beautiful building. No, you don't have to take a picture of me running through the entrance door, thank you!
OMG people stand outside my FLAT in canary wharf and take photos of the view. It's like... yes, I'm just trying to get past with 5 tesco bags...uhuh...yup if you could just move now?
DeleteAlso:
Slow walking people with UMBRELLAS (it's fine, I'm just getting drenched while you take up the pavement)
The new Celebrations (replacing Malteasers with a Twix - awful)
TVshows that repeat themselves constantly every time there's an ad break like we all the memory of a fish
OK that's enough for now...
The perks of being a hipster
Haha, that sounds even more annoying than I can imagine! and HOW DID I MISS that they changed malteasers with a twix? :O I am not up to my A game in sweeticine anymore :( that's bad!
DeleteConsidering tv shows: I usually watch them on netflix or online, if possible. I don't own a tv, because ad breaks only make me hangry. And there's simply no space for a tv left, my computer "is" my tv. Okay, enough with the rambling.
Yes! Is it really bad that I'm getting really excited by other people venting? It's such a wonderful thing that brings people together... :p people walking slowly on pavements is soooo annoying but now that I'm one of them for the time being I can't get too angsty :p I was never really a fan of Celebrations (don't shoot me), one of my peeves now is the amount of added sugar in chocolate, goddammit I want to taste the cacao! xxx
DeleteMy friends and I are exactly the same as you! When something pisses us off- mainly people being vapid- we will not hear the end of it... We'd never say it to their faces but sometimes its nice to know that other people get pissed off at ignorance too!
ReplyDeleteHope the foot is getting better x
It's just so good to rant isn't it?? Funnily enough I haven't ranted about the foot yet although I'm sure I'll get there... if someone is being genuinely ignorant/arrogant/bigoted I won't hesitate to put them straight, there was this guy on my Facebook feed once who I used to be friends with (embarrassing) complaining about all the immigrants in our community who didn't speak English and who were "ruining British culture". I put him straight so damn much and got so many likes on my comments he deleted the status. Resuuuult xxx
DeleteI totally feel you, it doesn't take much to annoy me either. Especially, Instagram hashtag girl - why does she have to do that? But seriously? I recently had the same realization about the blogs in my newsfeed. It becomes so easy to miss the ones you're really interested in just because there are so many there. It's definitely time for a little blog spring cleaning.
ReplyDeleteBut it feels so deliciously naughty to read all of those hashtags and cringe at each and every one! I love it! I'm a nasty person... and yes, I've started reading everything on my feed so I can decide whether they're one to keep or not! xxx
DeleteP.s, please keep me everyone? :p
I totally feel ya on dealing with annoyance. I start of really pissed/annoyed/irritated/ about something and rant about it until it becomes funny. Then I laugh about it, and it's over. Mutual ranting with a friend is the best. This is usually followed by a glass of wine and a guilty pleasure TV show. :) One thing that I get really annoyed by is people failing to signal when driving. Drives me nuts! Can't wait to read about what grinds your gears!
ReplyDeleteSam
That Curious Cat
Ooh yes perfect! Although our ranting matches at uni were always followed by a dejected look back at our bedroom doors and a "right... back to studying then!" not quite the same :p and oh my gooooooood, do not get me started on people failing to signal! xxx
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am the same way as you. Gah! (Except sometimes I feel like I put too many hashtags. I try not to go too crazy because I know how annoying it is!) I am really looking forward to your post on things that annoy you in the blogging world. I've been thinking of writing a post like that myself but I haven't got the guts. :p
ReplyDeletexo Kimi
Haha I probably shouldn't have the guts to be honest! I'm going to try and keep it as nice as possible though :D xxx
DeleteI'm looking forward to seeing what bothers you about the blogging world. We all have our pet peeves, that's for sure! I really dislike people walking slowly or taking up the entire sidewalk or hallway; I'm known to walk like I'm "on a mission," so having to slow my pace always frustrates me. Certain noises really set me off--the sound of nails getting clipped, especially. Ticking clocks also bother me, for whatever reason. I guess I'm just easily distracted by "random" noises and would prefer them to be absent, haha.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I have a friend who cannot stand the sound of people chewing which is really unfortunate as I'm a very slurpy eater and can't change it! Hopefully my list of pet peeves will be seen as reasonable,.. xxx
DeleteNot only do I seek out annoyances but I add them to my blog feed. Seriously. 2 days ago it dawned on me that the only reason I had a particular blog in my feed was because she annoyed me and I couldn't pry my eyes away. (wth is wrong with me??) Fortunately, I had a spurt of maturity and Googled "how to unfollow a blog on blogger" and removed it.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for your next Gear Grinding chat - I want to see if the same bloggy things annoy you that annoy me. :P
