Chocolat/Shokolat Milano, Via Giovanni Boccaccio 9 |
Milan is a strange city. It isn't as popular with tourists as its Roman or Venetian cousins and for a newcomer to the city, it's perhaps easy to see why.
After the Duomo and the castello and the guided tour of Da Vinci's Last Supper, after the peruse of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the obligatory selfie outside Prada, after a morning spent at Monumentale wandering between the marble tombs of the rich and famous from the past couple of centuries... it can feel as if it's time to buy the t-shirt, up and leave.

First of all, it has treasures such as Villa Necchi Campiglio sitting quietly and going relatively unnoticed down winding residential streets. Then there is the thrill of jumping on a train and being whisked away to one of the neighbouring destinations; take your pick from Lake Como, Lake Garda, Bergamo or even Venice.
Everyone has their own version of the city; one guide might take you around to gaze at the hidden parks and gardens, another might show you the magnificent statue of a hand giving the finger to the Milanese Borsa (Italian Wall Street) whilst another will take you to the Navigli or Arco della Pace to experience the bustling nightlife.

But if I'm your guide, you better come with an empty stomach.
It hasn't been an easy journey but I have officially earned a reputation for knowing about Italian food with my friends and colleagues. As in, my Italian friends and colleagues. Want to know the best place for ice cream in the city? Let me show you. Looking for deep pan pizza or the real deal? I'm your girl. Fancy trying a tasting menu without blowing the bank? I've got one for that too.
Io so dove andare.

"I'll be in the museum all morning, so maybe we could have a picnic in the park afterwards!" He suggested.
It was a fair idea but with one day only, I knew there was more to be made of Milan.
"Or...." I began.
"O..." Ho cominciato a dire.
Don't worry, we didn't actually eat everything in these photos. These are just a random collection I've taken over the past year. We did, however, eat ourselves to the verge of desperation in a whirlwind tour of the city's best fast food points.
I was a bit mean to poor Jon. I took him to Luini for panzerotti, Spontini for more pizza, Cioccolati Italiani (pictured further above) for ice cream and then finally, we topped it off with a cannolo from Ciurì Ciurì. Oh and then we had a beer.

Sono stata un po' cattiva. Povero Jon.

- Don't write Milan off. Come and give it a try. It has truly become my home for the past year and I am going to miss it ever so much when I leave.
- If at first your new hometown seems boring and dull, give it a chance. It took me months to discover just how much there was to see, do and eat here. I used to think it was a long-weekend affair at most. Now I'm panicking because I won't be able to do everything I want to before I leave.
La cosa che vorrei dire è questo:
- Non ignorare Milano. Venite a provarla.

And if you ever want a recommendation for Milan, just get in touch. I might have something up my sleeve.
E la tua città natale? Ti piace o no?
Forse conosco qualcosa.
I'm leaving for Italy this week hopefully and spending two weeks! I will have to see if we're near Milan and then you can guide me to the best food. I want to eat EVERYTHING.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, how did you learn Italian? I want to learn German now that I'm here and I'm thinking of doing one of the online programs.
Yes, do let me know!! The food is amaaazing, I'm so impressed with myself that I haven't gained 50 stone! (Or kilos or pounds or whatever you want to measure weight in haha)
DeleteI learnt it using books, I went to a bookshop in England and bought all the learning Italian books in the language section haha! But just doing exercises, learning tenses and vocabulary, listening to it on the radio and watching films all helps, it's best to just try a range of learning styles to get you into it! (Read bilingual blogs too?) xxx
Ice cream :)
ReplyDeleteBest in the world! xxx
DeleteOh God. That pizza looks out of this world. I think I need to come and visit you. I WANT ALL THE FOOD! xx

Thank you! xxx
DeleteWhenever we go into Milan, it is ALWAYS for the food! The city has the diversity that we here in Lecco do not, so I'll trade a day or two at the lake for a stay in Milan anytime.
ReplyDeleteLecco is gorgeous though! Have you checked out the piadina spot behind the Grom on the lake front? xxx
DeleteGreat post, it all looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm going to miss it xxx
DeleteI went to Milan for the first time last year and I agree with like everything here! I loved the Duomo, and the gelato, and we did a day trip to Lake Como which was so stunning. Actually I'd like to go back to Lake Como one day !! However we didn't find that many good places to eat unfortunately :( We must have been looking in the wrong places
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame, it's so easy to find bad food in the cities though! I research food meticulously whenever I go to a new place haha and always insist on staying away from the sights when hunting for restaurants xxx
DeleteYummy! The pictures make me hungry lol
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I just followed your blog :)

Thank you! Me too, I'll be starving when I have to go back to uni and look through my pictures from this year! xxx
DeleteYes! Many, many times yes! One of the best ways to get to know a neighborhood is to walk or bike around ... and to find places to eat. We always need food, so why not know of a variety of places? And, that way, you're never out of dinner options when planning to meet up with friends. Since I've moved to Indianapolis, I've taken an interest in "eating local." (There are so many chain restaurants in the States, I swear.) A friend and I actually try to eat at a new-to-us restaurant every week, which works out well. I really enjoy trying new things! Lastly, Milano sounds like an excellent place to visit. You always hear about how Rome has "so much history," but, really, the entire country does! I actually have friends in Turin, so visiting Milano would be entirely possible. :)
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely make a trip over then! There's so much to explore in the North of the country, you could go around Turin and Piemonte, Venice, Verona, Milan, Emilia Romagna... just think of all the food! That's a great idea, I might see if I can get a similar thing going with friends when I go back to uni :) xxx
DeleteSo true! It's hard to see the bright side of your home when you're young. North Carolina sounds great, lucky you! xxx
ReplyDeleteLove your photographs. I'll come to Milan if you show me all of that haha ;p
