Yesterday, the 1st of May, was a public holiday in Italy.
Every year on this day, the streets of Milan fill with people protesting important social issues.
This year, the protest mainly revolved around the Expo which is coming to Milan next year.
Whilst this is an amazing opportunity for growth and development for the city, there have of course been a number of controversies surrounding it, particularly regarding working conditions. The parade this year was taking a stand against the fact that many people working for Expo are being paid next to nothing or, indeed, nothing at all.
Other issues being protested included the destruction of natural beauty for the sake of infrastructure, corrupt politicians and unmet promises and poor working conditions for interns and students.
Yet despite these serious issues lying at the heart of the parade, the day was nothing short of a giant moving street party.
Vans and trucks became parade floats and moving bars with music blaring from large speakers. Speakers took it in turns to rouse the crowd into cheers with their brilliant, motivational speeches, explaining their cause.
The following grew and grew. At times we danced along behind, all following the steps to the YMCA. At other times, masked people jumped from the crowd and began an organise graffiti protest on buildings that lie empty in the city to mark how badly the government's money is being misspent.
In these photos, I have tried to capture the amazing atmosphere from the day. At the beginning I was simply an observer, by the end an exhausted and ecstatic participant.
Enjoy!
A volte, ballavamo tutti insieme a canzoni popolari come YMCA.
All'inizio, osservavo solo.
Wow. What an interesting post! So many bloggers only show resorts or touristy parts of the places they travel to, without attempting to really explore the place, its cultures, and its people. That's why I find your blog so refreshing! I feel like I really get a REAL taste of Milan!

Thank you so much, that's such a lovely comment! It was an amazing day but I actually got a lot of angry Italians (ok, only two) on Twitter saying the whole thing was stupid after I posted. One of them really went on and on about how we were all barbaric idiots who had ruined the city - it turns out that after I left the parade there was a bit of rioting in a piazza. I don't endorse that side of the parade but it was a great day otherwise xxx
DeleteWow, what time was this? I was in the area at 4ish and saw nothing of the sort! The streets were quiet, even.

I actually can't remember what time of day it was! That's awful, what has happened to my memory? I'm pretty sure we headed down after lunch, perhaps the parade started at 2/3? And then finished around 8ish where the party lasted all night, or so I've heard haha xxx
